Focus on the Sunday Gospel for the First Sunday in Lent.

Use this unit study to help children understand that God wants us to fight the temptation to sin. The inspiration for this lesson is the Gospel of St. Mark 1:12-15.

In this week's Gospel, we learn that temptation is a tool used by Satan to get us to follow him and abandon God. And Satan spares no one from this torment for even Jesus underwent his temptation. As Christ fasted and prayed for forty days in the desert, God the Father allowed Him to be tempted by the devil. This period of hardship not only tests Christ's obedience to His heavenly Father but it also enables Jesus to sympathize with mans’ weaknesses toward sin. In our own times of trial and temptation, we must remember Christ's bold example and try to follow it instead of falling into sin. And as if Christ's example wasn't enough, to help us even further, the Lord provides each of us with a guardian angel who is ready to help guide, guard, and direct us.

Lent is a time that Catholics pray and fast as the whole Church remembers how Jesus was victorious over temptation and sin and looks forward to celebrating the Lord's Resurrection at Easter.
