Celebrate Catholic Schools Week

“If I had to advise parents, I should tell them to take great care about the people with whom their children associate . . . Much harm may result from bad company, and we are inclined by nature to follow what is worse than what is better.” – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Catholic Schools Week – Let’s Us Celebrate Catholic Schools!

Did you know that there are over 6500 Catholic Schools in the US? Of those, about 80 percent of the institutions are elementary schools.  They lay the foundation for good Christian living as early as preschool or kindergarten.   Not only do young children become knowledgeable about the Catholic faith, but they also learn how to live out the call to charity in their own families, schools, and communities. As well, Catholic schools encourage their students to learn about servitude and leadership, both of which are valuable tools for success later in life.

Catholic Schools Week is celebrated in the U.S. every year during the last week of January. It is a week designed to highlight the value of Catholic education to the local community and the community at large. Along with their adjoining parishes, Catholic schools hold special activities and prayer celebrations throughout the week. Plus, the institutions extend a warm open-house invitation to any who might wish to visit them.

The annual weekly celebration helps to build school spirit for the students while spotlighting the real value of learning about the world from a Catholic perspective. Children can come to understand why their learning environment is incomparable and why their school is essential. During Catholic Schools Week, many teachers choose to introduce students to the patron saints of Catholic schools, teachers, or education. Children can learn about St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Bosco, and St. Thomas Aquinas.
